Endurance in sport pdf

Astrand P.O., Shephard R. ebook

The Olympic motto, "Citius, Altius, Fortius" ("swifter, higher, stronger"), has pushed many athletes to the limits of human endurance. When the 40,000-m Olympic marathon was run in 2 hours, 58 minutes, and 50 seconds in 1896, who could have imagined that a 42,195-m marathon would be run in a record-setting time of 2 hours, 5 minutes, and 42 seconds in Chicago in 1999? In 1932, the winning time for the 50-km walk was 4 hours, 50 minutes, and 10 seconds. In 2000, the race was won in 3 hours, 42 minutes, and 22 seconds.

The rapid growth of ergogenic aids since the 1960s has caused sports organizers to develop regulations and testing procedures to detect participants who try to gain an unfair advantage. This testing has led to a new type of competition. At each Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Medical Commission tests athletes for the use of illicit substances. When newly developed ergogenic aids are detected, they are banned from the next competition. By then, athletes are often taking something new. Thus, the athletes who choose to take banned substances try to stay one quadrennium ahead of drug-use ("doping") control.

Endurance in Sport was written for almost anyone who has some scientific background and who deals with athletes engaged in endurance sports. Its readership may include sports scientists, doctors, athletic trainers, coaches, graduate students, and athletes themselves. The section that deals with the biologic basis of endurance performance was written for the sports physiologist. The exercise physiology of the various organ systems is well covered. The sports scientist in a broader sense will benefit from the section on methods of measuring the various determinants of endurance performance. The coach or trainer will learn from the chapters that deal with the principles of preparation for various types of endurance competition; among the topics covered are conditioning, food, fluids, hemoglobin level, blood volume, smoking, alcohol use, and drug use. Environmental aspects of endurance training, especially chronobiology, are important. For example, a coach taking his team from the East Coast to a competition in Denver will have to cope not only with a time change but with high altitude as well. There are also chapters that deal with genetic determinants of and physical limitations to endurance performance.

If the athlete has sufficient scientific knowledge and interest, he or she will benefit from the entire book, which covers essentially every important aspect of training for endurance sports. Individual sports discussed in detail are running, swimming, rowing, cross-country skiing, cycling, the triathlon, canoeing, soccer, mountaineering, and human-powered flight. What is unique about this book is that it is truly international in scope. The IOC Medical Commission has assembled contributions from 87 experts from 14 countries to make up this encyclopedia. It would be hard for any group other than the IOC to gather so much expertise into one volume, as they have done here.

Knowledge of how to maximize the function of human regulatory mechanisms during prolonged exercise and of how to optimize other aspects of performance in each sport is the key to faster, higher, and stronger performance. This encyclopedia will help athletes and those who help them prepare for the endurance that is required.
