The WIF Cookbook is a hands-on guide to real time problems in implementing single sign-on and claims based identity.I thank the author for his work as WIF is one topic that is very scarcely documented and often confusing to implement. The only book that provided significant insight so far was the one by Vittorio. This book is a nice addition especially for developers on the job, working on implementing security in applications built on .NET. The first few chapters in the book are loaded with recipes that help you understand the basics and then explain claims-based identity scenarios on ASP.NET MVC based applications. This is very relevant today since most of the web applications are developed using ASP.NET MVC. The second part of the book covers scenarios involving ACS and ADFS. While the ACS recipes are fairly standard, nice additions are the recipes providing steps to configure claims in mobile devices. I wish the author elaborated the steps further on integrating ACS with iOS, but I guess makes sense given the no of scenarios covered in the entire book (it would have been difficult to cover all of them in detail). The last chapter is a surprising addition. Provides insightful details into what's coming in future and how claims are becoming first class citizens in Windows 8.

Implementing security is always been a concern and requires expertise to implement in the typical enterprise dealing with many technologies. Claims based Identity address the user authentication, authorization and single sign-on issue for an enterprise and B2B.
This book gives an insight and covers "how to implement" for common scenarios starting from ASP.Net, Windows Phone, iOS, ADFS, REST Services, SharePoint, MS CRM, Office 365, Windows Azure applications, Salesforce and Windows 8 Metro applications. A single book covering security dealing with many technologies is a challenge and author has explained and put together-well with the code.
I would recommend this book as a reference if you are implementing claims based identity or "wanna be" expert.

I found a couple of things very useful in this book.

1. Implementing claims based identity in MVC (specially an MVC application as a token service)

2. Distributed token cache implementation.

The book has nice step by step implementation of several useful scenarios. You would however need some prior experience to fully understand the concepts. Lot of content is compressed into the book so you may not find elaborate explainations.
